With Bilal Mohi-ud-Din Bhat assuming charge as Deputy Commissioner of Anantnag district, attention has swiftly shifted to the ecologically fragile tourist hub of Pahalgam, where allegations of unauthorized constructions and regulatory violations have been surfacing persistently.
During his tenure in Budgam district, Bhat earned a reputation for decisive enforcement, particularly during the demolition of illegal brick kilns accused of polluting agricultural land and violating environmental norms. That administrative firmness is now being invoked as a benchmark for what many believe is urgently required in Pahalgam.
Prominent RTI activist and environmentalist Raja Muzaffar Bhat reiterated that fragile eco-zones cannot survive regulatory complacency. “Tourist destinations like Pahalgam demand strict compliance with environmental and land-use laws. Any unchecked expansion will have irreversible consequences,” he said, urging transparent inspections and enforcement wherever violations are established.
Adding to the growing concern, Muhammad Suhail Dar, a local tour operator, expressed deep anxiety over what he described as uncontrolled structural expansion. “If this continues without strict regulation, Pahalgam will lose its soul. Tourism thrives on natural beauty — once that balance is destroyed, livelihoods will collapse,” he lamented, warning that environmental degradation would ultimately hurt both business and biodiversity.
Legal observers and civil society members argue that the district administration now faces a defining test — whether enforcement will be uniform and consistent, or whether environmental concerns will continue to simmer.
The question echoing across the valley is simple yet powerful: Will DC Bilal Mohi-Ud-Din Bhat replicate in Anantnag the same decisive governance that marked his tenure in Budgam?
As scrutiny intensifies over alleged illegal constructions in and around Pahalgam, the coming months may determine whether administrative resolve can match the scale of environmental challenge.
