Srinagar, Feb 14: In a decisive move to ensure food safety and hygiene, the Drug and Food Control Organisation (Food Safety) Srinagar intensified its inspection drive across the city, focusing on street vendors and roadside eateries. As part of this special campaign, a dedicated team led by Assistant Commissioner, Food Safety Srinagar, Yameen-ul-Nabi, along with district food safety officers, conducted surprise inspections in Hazratbal and Makhdoom Sahib areas to assess hygiene standards and food quality.The inspection team found several food business operators (FBOs) violating food safety norms, particularly in the use of artificial colors in Kashmiri snacks, which were immediately seized and destroyed on the spot. Authorities confirmed that strict action, as per Food Safety and Standards Act (FSSA) regulations, will be initiated against violators.Creating Awareness Among VendorsIn addition to penalizing defaulters, the food safety team also conducted a short awareness session for food business operators. Vendors were educated on proper food handling, storage practices, and the hazards of using artificial colors, advising them to switch to natural food colorants. The team emphasized the importance of sanitation and pest control, warning that unsanitary conditions and unhygienic food preparation could lead to legal repercussions, including closure of businesses.Focus on Roadside Eateries and Hygiene ViolationsA key focus of the drive was street food stalls selling ready-to-eat food. Several roadside vendors were directed to maintain strict hygiene and sanitary standards.
