Kulgam, January 24: In a significant breakthrough in the fight against drug trafficking, four individuals were convicted under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act in connection with FIR No. 21/21. The case, registered at Police Station Yaripora, culminated in the conviction of Md Aslam War, Bilal Ahmad Hanji, Mehraj-u-Deen Wani, and Waqar Ahmad Dar for their involvement in the illegal possession and transportation of narcotic substances.
The conviction was announced by the Hon’ble Court, which found the accused guilty under Sections 8/20, 22, and 29 of the NDPS Act. Arguments regarding the quantum of punishment are scheduled to take place on January 30, 2025.
The case originated from a routine Nakka checking conducted by alert police personnel in Yaripora. During the operation, the accused were intercepted while traveling in a vehicle. Upon searching the vehicle, law enforcement recovered 42 bottles of intoxicating drugs and a quantity of Charas. Following the arrest, a detailed investigation was conducted, leading to the filing of a comprehensive chargesheet and a robust prosecution in court.
The Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir was represented in the case by Shri Ajaz Ahmad Najar, Chief Prosecuting Officer (CPO) and Public Prosecutor for Kulgam. His meticulous preparation and compelling arguments were instrumental in securing the conviction of the accused.
“This conviction sends a strong message that drug trafficking and related crimes will not be tolerated. Law enforcement agencies and the prosecution are committed to ensuring a drug-free society by taking strict action against offenders,” said an official.
The successful prosecution in this case is being hailed as a major step towards curbing the menace of narcotics in the region. The Prosecution has reaffirmed its dedication to combating drug trafficking and ensuring justice for the community.
This case marks another milestone in the efforts of the police and legal system to address the growing concerns of drug-related crimes in the Union Territory, reflecting a zero-tolerance policy towards those indulging in such illegal activities.
