Sumbal, Kashmir | April 28
Amidst the quiet lanes of Sumbal, where temple bells once symbolized peace, a new sound now echoes — the silent, unbreakable resistance of Dr. Sandeep Mawa, a Kashmiri Pandit and founder of the J&K Reconciliation Front, who has emerged as a singular voice against the unchecked corruption eating into Kashmir’s religious and social fabric.

On an indefinite hunger strike to reclaim temple lands allegedly encroached upon by private players, Dr. Mawa’s crusade took a chilling turn when a bullet was found near his protest site, a cowardly attempt to silence a man who refuses to bend.

“This bullet isn’t just aimed at me,” Dr. Mawa said while coming live on social media, holding up the chilling symbol of intimidation. “It’s aimed at every Kashmiri who believes that temples are not for sale, that justice cannot be bartered.”

Despite the threat, Mawa’s resolve remains iron-clad. Frail in body but indomitable in spirit, he stands alone, refusing to eat, refusing to surrender. His fight is not just against land grabbers; it’s against a system that protects them through silence, bureaucracy, and threats.

This is not the first time Mawa has rattled powerful cages. Earlier, he had exposed serious embezzlement allegations at the historic Shree Sharika Mata Mandir at Hari Parbat, forcing the Jammu and Kashmir government to launch a high-level probe under the supervision of the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (East).
The inquiry, now active, follows complaints of donation box funds being misused under the temple management’s nose — a revelation that shook the community and triggered emergency meetings within religious organizations.

Supporters rally around Mawa, calling him a modern-day torchbearer for Kashmir’s conscience. “What he is facing today is the price of telling the truth in a land where fear is often stronger than faith,” said a senior member of the civil society movement backing his strike.

Activists and ordinary citizens alike fear for his safety, especially after authorities have so far failed to register a proper FIR into the death threat attempt. Many are questioning whether Kashmir’s administration will only act after a tragedy forces their hand.

Dr. Mawa’s hunger strike demands not just restoration of temple land, but the restoration of accountability. His campaign challenges both corrupt elements in society and the inertia of the system that enables them.

As the bullet lies on the ground where prayers once rose, the message is clear:
The fight for Kashmir’s soul has a new soldier, and he refuses to back down—even when the threat comes cold, metallic, and deadly.
