Srinagar, J&K – March 4, 2025: In a groundbreaking initiative, Kashmir is set to witness the establishment of its first-ever crowdfunded university, an ambitious project aimed at revolutionizing higher education in the region. Named The University of WathHarbor, this institution will be entirely powered by public contributions, making it a university by the people, for the people, and of the people of J&K.
Announced at a press conference in Srinagar, the initiative is a response to the limited higher education opportunities in Jammu & Kashmir, where over 150,000 students are enrolled across 11 government universities, yet thousands leave the region every year in search of quality education. The University of WathHarbor aims to change this by providing world-class learning in Artificial Intelligence, Robotics, and the Fourth Industrial Revolution technologies, ensuring Kashmir’s youth are equipped for the competitive global job market.
Unlike conventional private institutions, this university will not have individual owners but will be a community-driven, non-profit endeavor focused on education, research, and social empowerment. The founders have urged the Jammu & Kashmir Government to support the initiative by allocating 25 acres of land on a 99-year lease at a nominal fee, following precedents set in Gujarat and Uttar Pradesh. Additionally, they have called for the enactment of the Private University Act in J&K to provide legal backing for independent educational institutions.
The project is entirely reliant on public funding, corporate social responsibility (CSR) contributions, and the support of the Kashmiri diaspora. The founders have invited businesses, professionals, and individuals to contribute, emphasizing that this is more than an educational project—it is a movement towards self-reliance and empowerment for future generations.
“This is not just about education; this is about shaping the future of Kashmir. We are building an institution that belongs to the people, and we invite everyone to be part of this historic journey,” said Dr. Mehboob Makhdoomi, the founder of the initiative.
With strong public participation and government backing, the University of WathHarbor is poised to become a global hub for research, innovation, and skill development, putting Kashmir at the forefront of modern education and technological advancement.
