Unchecked Encroachments in Pahalgam Endanger the Sacred Pilgrimage as Environmental Collapse Looms, While Journalists Face Intimidation for Exposing the Truth

Bilal Bhat

Srinagar 18 February 2025: Sacred Amarnath Yatra, a pilgrimage of immense religious significance, is under grave threat as unchecked illegal constructions in Pahalgam wreak havoc on the fragile Himalayan ecosystem. The unregulated human intervention, deforestation, and rapid commercialization in the area have led to severe environmental degradation, endangering not only the region’s ecological balance but also the sanctity and future of the pilgrimage itself. The Lidder River, a crucial water source for the region, is being polluted at an alarming rate due to unchecked waste disposal from newly constructed illegal hotels and guesthouses. Deforestation caused by reckless construction has resulted in rising temperatures, leading to a drastic decline in snowfall, which directly impacts the formation of the sacred ice Shivlingam at the Amarnath Cave. Springs that once provided water to local communities and pilgrims have dried up, and experts warn that within 30 years, Pahalgam could become barren, making the Amarnath pilgrimage impossible.

Satish Mahaldar, President of the JK Peace Forum, condemned the government’s inaction, stating, “I strongly condemn the way the government is handling this. Our pleas have fallen on deaf ears. Amarnath is in great danger due to looming natural disasters. Shockingly, no one from the Kashmiri Pandit community is part of the Shrine Board, raising serious concerns about the protection and management of this sacred pilgrimage.”

While the looming threat is determental, several politicians feel pain of the ongoing slaughter, while talking to the Kashmiris firebrand politician, Dr. Sandeep Mawa, a Kashmiri Pandit leader and prominent political figure, he blames the deep-rooted corruption behind this crisis. “A well-organized mafia is working in Pahalgam. Reckless and unprecedented illegal commercial structures are being raised without any concern for the environment. This has resulted in the depletion of snow and rainfall due to rising temperatures caused by deforestation and human intervention. While making appeal to the leaders, politicians, hindu bodies, he said “I appeal to Home Minister Amit Shah and Prime Minister Narendra Modi to take immediate and strong action. All Hindu bodies, politicians, and environmentalists must unite to protect Amarnath.” He further revealed that bureaucrats, politicians, and even officials from the police department have personally benefited from this destruction, raising structures without considering Hindu sentiments or the environmental consequences.

Dr. Raja Muzaffar, a renowned RTI activist and environmental expert, issued a dire warning. “If this continues, in just 30 years, Pahalgam will turn into a dry, barren land. The Amarnath pilgrimage, which has been a spiritual journey for centuries, will no longer be possible. We have already seen yatris losing their lives due to natural disasters, and this crisis will only worsen if human greed is not curtailed.”

The Pahalgam Development Authority (PDA) recently attempted to take action by identifying and issuing demolition notices to 300 illegal structures. However, the government official leading the crackdown, CEO Masarat Hashim, was abruptly transferred—a move widely seen as an attempt to protect those benefiting from the destruction of Pahalgam’s ecosystem. Senior PDP leader Waheed Para voiced concerns over this development, stating, “Just a day after CEO Pahalgam identified 300 illegal constructions violating the green belt, he was abruptly removed. This exposes how deeply political interference shields environmental violations.” This is not an isolated incident, as previous officials who opposed illegal construction in Pahalgam have also been transferred under suspicious circumstances, demoralizing those who try to protect the environment and emboldening violators.

The impact of this crisis extends beyond environmental degradation. The reckless exploitation of Pahalgam is not only threatening the Amarnath Yatra but also leading to the persecution of those who speak out against these illegal activities. Awami Reporter, which has been fearlessly reporting on these illegal constructions and the ecological disaster unfolding in Pahalgam, is now being targeted by the organized mafia. Journalists exposing these violations have faced intimidation, threats, and relentless pressure to silence their voices. The attempt to muzzle independent journalism highlights the influence of those profiting from environmental destruction, revealing a nexus between powerful lobbies and political figures working to suppress the truth.

Environmental experts, religious leaders, and activists are calling for immediate government action to halt illegal constructions, prosecute violators, and restore Pahalgam’s lost ecology. The demands include strict enforcement of environmental laws, large-scale reforestation efforts, preservation of the Lidder River, and protection of government officials and journalists working to expose these violations.

The fate of the Amarnath Yatra now hangs in the balance. If urgent measures are not taken, this sacred pilgrimage may soon become a relic of the past, lost to corruption, greed, and environmental neglect. With religious and environmental concerns at stake, the question remains—will the authorities act in time, or will yet another sacred site fall victim to unchecked exploitation?
