Srinagar, April 3: The All India Imam Organization (AIIO) Chief, Dr Umer Ahmed Ilyasi, on Friday lauded the leadership of Dr Darakhshan Andrabi, describing the functioning of the Jammu and Kashmir Waqf Board under her tenure as a “model of transformation” and an inspiring example of institutional reform.
Dr Ilyasi, who visited the Central Office of the J&K Waqf Board in Srinagar, addressed a press conference in the presence of Chairperson Dr Darakhshan Andrabi and senior officials. He said that the changes witnessed in the functioning of the Waqf Board reflect a broader shift towards accountability, welfare, and structured governance in the Union Territory.

Referring to the overall situation in Jammu and Kashmir, Dr Ilyasi said that despite the recent Pahalgam incident, the region continues to demonstrate resilience, peace, and hospitality. He expressed satisfaction over the warmth shown by local residents towards tourists and visitors, calling it a reassuring sign of normalcy and social harmony.
Highlighting developments in recent years, the AIIO Chief said Jammu and Kashmir has entered a new phase of stability and progress, adding that institutions like the Waqf Board are playing a visible role in this transition. “Waqf Board under Dr Andrabi symbolises positive transformation in Jammu and Kashmir. The reforms undertaken are inspiring and people-centric,” he said.
Dr Ilyasi particularly appreciated the welfare-oriented initiatives introduced under Dr Andrabi’s leadership, including the transition of Imams and Khateebs from irregular honorariums to a structured salary system, a move that has significantly enhanced financial security and dignity for religious functionaries.
He also took note of the administrative streamlining within the Board and the focus on improving transparency and efficiency in the management of Waqf affairs. Over the past few years, the Board has undertaken development and renovation works at several key religious sites, reflecting an effort to modernise facilities and improve the experience for devotees.
Dr Andrabi, while interacting with the visiting delegation, said that the Waqf Board remains committed to strengthening institutional mechanisms and ensuring that its services reach stakeholders in a more effective and transparent manner. She reiterated that the role of Imams and Khateebs goes beyond leading prayers, as they also serve as guides in promoting social values, compassion, and community harmony.
Dr Ilyasi appreciated these reformative steps, stating that the transformation of the Waqf Board in Jammu and Kashmir stands as an example for similar institutions across the country.
Prominent Imams and Khateebs associated with the Waqf Board were present on the occasion, along with Executive Magistrate of the Board, Ishtiyaq Mohiuddin.
